The Characteristics Of Ants

Ants are hardy members of the insect world, capable of living in places with the most hostile living conditions unsuitable for other flora and fauna. Ants exists within a very organized colony, and their number can reach up to more than a million, the members of which are the worker ants, the soldiers, and the single queen. Honeypot ants generally have enlarged stomachs. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America and they can be found in deserts as well. These ants are also considered a great delicacy in some places.

Leaf cutter ants feed exclusively on fungus and live only within their colony. They come in various sized castes to carry out several functions that are to be performed in the colony.

Ants that have a sac of poison are known as the fire ant. Their “poison” is known as piperidine alkaloids.

Lastly, one of the largest and most primeval types of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. Being of a primitive type, they have only 1 chromosome.
