Basic Categorization Of Plumbing Valves

Valves are mechanical devices that are used to control the volume of flow and pressure of fluids or gases. Closing, opening, or partially opening a passage through which the material passes regulates this flow.

Valves are quite diverse and may be classified into a number of basic types. Valves may also be classified by how they are actuated. For instance the compression valves, disk valves, ball valves, cartridge valves and the repairing valves.

Compression or stem type faucet – This is a two-handle faucet design. With a single faucet, you can enjoy both hot and cold water as per the requirement. You can tell a stem faucet by the way it feels when you turn it off. One can feel a rubber washer being squeezed inside the faucet. Compression valves possess o- rings beneath the faucet’s stem that tend to wear and tear with time.

Different compression valves have different stem designs however all utilizes the neoprene washers. The only cause for a leaky valve is a damaged washer.

Then comes the cartridge valves that are also known as washer- less valves are operated by only one handle. This way these are different to the compression valves. Inside this valve a metal or plastic cylindrical cartridge is located. As you lift the handle, the valve stem raises and its holes align with the holes of the cartridge. On the other hand, as you twist the handle, cold and hot water mix and regulate water temperature.

Disk valves are also without the washers. They are used mostly in single-handle kitchen sink faucets. These are also cylindrical in shape and are present in the faucet. This type of valve uses ceramic disks which fit exactly against each other, with every disk having a series of holes. It comprise of two hoses, one each for the hot and cold water.

Ball valve is an automatic flow control device. Regulating principle is the level of some free water surface. Ball valves basically consist of one handle under which a cylindrical cap is located. As the valve handle is turned to open the valve, the ball rotates to a point where part or the entire hole through the ball is in line with the valve body inlet and outlet, allowing fluid to flow through the valve.

Repairing valve: Leaking water valve is the most common plumbing problem within the home. Thus, repairing valves are highly prone to leaks. However, these can be repaired very easily.

How To Move An Electrical Outlet ?

When you make a new house, you install the electric wiring and outlets according to your need, but after some days or years you may feel the need of a fitting or outlet at some other place where you don’t have it. In that case, you either put a new outlet there or move an unused outlet at that place.

For moving an existing outlet you need to have a drywall or keyhole saw, Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, cut-in electrical box, 12×3 electrical wiring, wire nuts, blank electrical plate, drill, 1 inch paddle bit, side cutting pliers and wire strippers.

You must know that before starting any electrical installation or repair, you should stop the flow of current in that particular circuit. Hence, switch off the circuit breaker connected to that outlet. To ensure that current is not flowing anymore, use a volt meter.

Next step is to prepare the space where you need to install your new cut-in electrical box. For that, trace the outline by putting the electrical box on the wall and cut it using a keyhole or drywall saw.

You can simply move the existing wire to the new outlet location. Just pull the wire up through the attic or down through the basement and move it to the new location. If the wire is not long enough then you have to run a new wire from the existing outlet to the new outlets location.

Fix the cut-in electrical box on the wall where you want new outlet. Tighten the 2 Phillips head screws on each corner until it grasps the drywall completely. Once the wire has reached near new outlet location, pull the wire through one of the wire feeds in the electrical box.

When you will do connections, put the black wire in the screw on hot side of the outlet (darker screw) and properly tighten it. Similarly attach the white wire to neutral side (lighter screw). Put the ground wire in green screw and your connection part is over. You can now fix the outlet to the electrical box using screws and at the end, put back the cover plate.

The old electrical box where the outlet was installed earlier should be covered with a blank plate to prevent any health hazard. Also to check that you have properly done the connections, switch on the power supply and check the outlet. If things run smoothly in the outlet then your job is done.

Choose One Among Various Shower Doors

One of the things that can give a newer look to your bathroom is a shower door. Different types and styles of shower doors are available for a homeowner to install in their bathroom. Standard hinge shower doors, pivot shower doors, folding and bi-fold doors are some of the popular shower doors available in the market.

Pivoting shower doors are not used for settings in which shower and tub are combined but are used only for showers. Such showers are made with a hard glass panel and have a metal frame over it. The biggest advantage of using them is that they can be quickly and conveniently installed.

Folding doors are generally not very popular. They are constructed from a waterproof material and when the door is fully closed, a strong shield is created which does not allow a single drop of water to go outside. They look very attractive when installed in proper manner.

For homeowners having small bathrooms, bi-fold shower door is a good option. These doors can be folded twice so they are made from two panels of tough glasses. While the door is properly closed in this type of shower door, not even a drop of water can go out.

After having a fair knowledge of all commonly used shower doors, you can decide to purchase any of them depending on your requirement and choice. Measure the width and height of the shower door to order a new one with same dimension.

Remove your old shower door carefully prior to installing a new one. It could be easy or difficult depending on the kind of fixing you had earlier.

Now it is time to install your new shower door but before starting make sure that all the parts and tools needed for the job are along with you so that your work is not interrupted in the mid. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions guide for installation.

The last step is to put silicone caulk around the door jam and at places where the shower door assembly touches the floor. By doing this you can be confident that there will be no leakage from your shower door. It will require 24 hours of time to get dry and after that you can enjoy new shower door and more beautiful look of your bathroom.

If one has decided to incorporate a prow roof overhead, he should follow some of the basic steps. Alike, normal roofing systems prow roofing also demands for installing the inbuilt rafters. Normal roofing systems and the prow roofing technique differs in their construction styles in the end of the roof. While the construction runs similarly for both roof types in the middle of the roof. This only involves fixing the rafters.

After installing the rafters, mount the roof cap boards over the rafter’s top. It is better to extend the boards at least up to 4 feet. This looks great and impressive.

Roof tar is then laid all over and stitched with the help of staples and tacks. Plywood base is then provided to the roof to make it strong and durable. The use of plywood is necessitated as it provides strength and long life to the roof. This is done after fixing the roof cap board.

Last step would be installing of the shingles and other roofing materials according to your need and taste and the manufacturers specifications.

Why To Install A Wireless Doorbell

Your doorbell is the first thing that the visitor encounters when arriving at your home. Ancient doorbells generally employ a switch or a push button. Although, the wired doorbell looks simple from outside but, it is very complicated when it comes to its internal circuitry. This involves a very inconvenient layout.

Modernization and miniaturization has made the world so upgraded that wired door bell seems so antiquated. Wireless doorbells suits to the growing and proceeding world.

Generally, wiring and making connections for the device is quite a heavy workout. And if you call an electricians for that, then he will charge you a lot of money. But, wireless door bells essentially save you from this situation. For them you don’t require long wire installation.

But, people getting more reserved, they want different doorbells on each door of their house. In such cases you need separate buttons to be installed at different doors of the house. In order to differentiate between their sounds, you can have different chimes.

Each button or switch would require a different receiver. These are either install at the place where you can clearly hear the ringing of the bell, if you are having only one bell that is at the entrance. The case differs if you want all your doors equipped with the bell switch. For that you need different receivers.

The added features like video capturing and recording adds to the beauty of the device. If the stranger rang the bell you can be alert in opening the door. Or you would resist opening the door even.

There are two types of receivers used in the wireless doorbell unit. One is the battery operated and the other is the plug- ins. For the battery operated ones ensure that they are working properly. Replace the batteries if they are discharged. Plug-in type receivers are simple. You only need to plug them in the outlet.

Their excessive range of advantages make them a suitable option among the homeowners. Moreover. The doorbell kit consists of all the necessary things and so you can install them by your own.

What Is A Plumbing Drum Trap ?

The plumbing traps are elemental in the overall working of your plumbing framework. When it comes to ensuring a serene schema to your home, the traps play a key role.

A plumbing trap is a component that performs two basic functions. First, it prevents the sewer and waste gases from entering into the spaces of the home. Secondly, it acts a trap to catch all the heavy items that have been drained mistakenly. Hence, the name ‘trap’ can be attributed to this particular function of plumbing traps.

Of all the varieties of traps available, the drum traps are the most outdated one. In the present scenario, they have been replaced by the more sophisticated s-traps and p-traps. Though, they are now a thing of the past but they have their own offerings. This eliminates the need of replacing them if your household is still equipped with one such trap.

The drum traps are identified by their drum-shaped apparatus. A small-sized steel drum that acts as a trap is employed in such traps. If you locate an access cap on the level of the floor close to a plumbing segment then it is a drum trap.

The ease of access associated with the drum traps is one thing that popularized them sometime back. This feature helps the plumbers a lot during the unclogging job of the drainage pipe. The plumber’s snake tool also finds an easy entry into the trap and the clogs in the form of hair, debris etc. are easily removed.

The traps in general maintain a water-seal in their setting such that the sewer gases don’t revert back to the spaces of the home. Some amount of water has to be maintained in the trap always. This is provided by the water that drains down the pipe.

Always keep a large-sized container or bucket in tact while uncapping a drum trap. This is because water may gush out of the setting. Keep the supervision of an expert handy to assist you throughout the life of the project.

If you decide to replace your drum trap with a more advanced one then avail the services of a plumber.
