On the northern side of Austin in Cedar Park, The Ranch at Brushy Creek is a master-planned community that offers luxury living while surrounded by the area’s natural beauty. Stu Ungar didn’t have much going for him in most areas of life. In fact, it could very well be argued that he was downright inept in most areas of existence. He also had a self destructive streak that manifest itself in heavy drug use and other behaviors. Ungar, however, had one great gift–he was a prodigy with a deck of cards. He would become one of the first superstars of poker before it became a fixture on ESPN, but wouldn’t live to enjoy the ‘boom’. Ungar would eventually be done in by his baser elements, and would be found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room in November,’88.
The only way to accurately describe Ungar’s poker skills is to evoke a sports metaphor–Ungar’s skills at the card table were like those of Michael Jordan or LeBron James on the basketball court. Ungar’s greatest accomplishment was his three World Series of Poker victories, an accomplishment not far removed from Michael Jordan’s six NBA titles. While countless volumes have been written on poker strategy, Ungar’s understanding of the game was almost instinctive. Although he won millions playing poker, the amazing reality was that it was essentially a ‘plan C’ for him as a professional card player. He started as a Gin Rummy prodigy, but quickly ran out of willing opponents in his native New York. He then moved to Nevada, and cleaned out the gin players in the Silver State. He turned to blackjack out of necessity and was almost instantly successful, only to be barred as a card counter at a number of Las Vegas casinos. Needing a new way to earn money as a card player, he took up poker.
The problem, however, was that as masterful as Ungar was at life in the poker room, he was profoundly inept at existence beyond the casino walls. He fought a number of addictions-most notably to drugs and sports gambling. Following his WSOP victory in’97, the’98 tourney found him broke and almost wasted away from drug use. Though he had secured financial backing that would have enabled him to play, as the games began Ungar sat in the dark in his hotel room at Binion’s unable to compose himself enough to appear.
There are countless other Ungar stories that evoke the same theme: he once paid cash for a new Mercedes and drove it until it simply fell apart from lack of basic maintenance. He signed his mortgage paperwork at the table in the Dunes poker room and was taken aback that he couldn’t make his down payment in chips.
Sadly, Ungar’s death came as a ray of hope had entered his life. Noted casino owner and longtime friend Bob Stupak had stepped in to help Ungar pay off his debts, clean up his life, and provide the stake money to enter the major poker tournaments. Ungar was found two days after the two had formalized the agreement in a contract. Ungar also left behind an ex-wife and a teenage daughter, who still live in Las Vegas. The official cause of death was listed as “coronary atherosclerosis” and a mixture of drugs including cocaine, methadone and Percodan were found in his system.
Most of the famous gamblers of Las Vegas legend-guys like Puggy Person and Doyle Brunson– have been tough, larger than life individuals with a healthier than normal dose of self-preservation skills. In this respect, Ungar was an anomaly among gambling greats-he was physically frail and almost completely helpless away from the poker table. With a handful of cards and a pile of chips, however, he became a ruthless and indomitable warrior. His story is certainly not one that the modern day, publicity conscious Las Vegas will celebrate. He will be remembered, however, as part of the tradition that gives the city its unique character. From the mobsters that pioneered the city, to the Rat Pack that civilized it, to the corporations that cleaned it up, characters like Stu Ungar have provided the spice that makes Las Vegas America’s ‘Paris in the desert’. Ungar may never have a statue on Fremont Street, but his spirit will live on.

Putting some flowers somewhere in a jumble can never be a form of art. Ikebana, the popular Japanese flower arrangement art incorporates the human art and natural art in a well arranged way to bring out an enchanting piece of art.
The main focus of Ikebana is to make use of different elements of art such as line, shape and form. This form of imaginative expression is highly disciplined and requires the artist to stay within the boundaries of the art form. The general rule of Ikebana requires all the different parts that are going to be used such as leaves, branches, grasses and flowers must have an organic structure.
Regulation in the number of flowers used is one of the fundamental features of Ikebana. A standard work of Ikebana will be composed on a limited number of flowers and they will be intermixed with leaves and stems.
The Ikebana composition has a structure that is based on a scalene triangle. This is delineated by three major points which are the twigs, the container and different styles of pottery. Different schools of Ikebana give various metaphorical aspects to these points.
The art of Ikebana has strong connections with the Buddhist practices and was derived from their practice of offering flowers to their dead ones. That may be why Ikebana is not considered as an attracting work of art.
It was in the 15th century that the first standard Ikebana compositions came into existence. Buddhism was introduced in Japan as early as the 6th century and this was where the roots of Ikebana lay.
The offering of flowers was considered to be a rite of the Buddhists. Actually the initial Ikebana artists were Buddhist priests and followers of the religion. With the passage of time however many various schools and styles of Ikebana emerged and the art form became a custom in society.
The oldest school of Ikebana is known as Ikenobo. The school sprung up due to the exceptional talents of a priest belonging to the Purple Cloud Temple who attracted a large number of priests from other areas who came to him in order to learn the art. The fact that he lived next to a lake which in Japanese is known as Ikenobo led to the school being named as such.
It was here that many people were trained and later became experts at the art of flower arrangement. Eventually many different styles of Ikebana developed and it became a widely practised form of art in Japan.

Moving is something we all hate it yet we all have to do it at least once in our lives. Depending on a person’s job, some people even do it yearly! We’ve all had a friend or known someone who’s had a friend who was an ‘army brat’ and had to move just about once a year, due to their parents getting reassigned in the army. Basically when it comes to moving, no matter where we are, we are all Tucson interstate mover, Pittsburgh interstate moving companies, Idaho interstate moving companies, etc.
Bad thoughts usually accompany the thought of moving! One never knows how much stuff they actually have until the time comes to move. Moving has two sides… Good and bad. The bad is leaving your current friends, any family that may reside there, and having to start over. It’s not a bad thing to remaking one’s self in a new place if they want to, be it out of want or need.

Always try to get rid of as much stuff as possible when moving… It will drastically improve the entire process! The main thing is to thin out what you have not used in a long time and truly do not need. It will make the entire moving process a whole lot easier and make it go that much faster.
Now after you have gotten everything packed, wrapped, and boxed up for your move, you need to decide how you are going to get your stuff to your new place. There are obviously two ways… You can move everything yourself, or you can hire interstate moving companies. Both have their obvious advantages and disadvantages. Doing it yourself will save you money, but will cost you a lot of time, worry, and stress. Hiring interstate moving companies does just the opposite. It will cost you money but will save you (for the most part) the time, worry, and stress.
If you choose to hire interstate moving companies to move your stuff, always check out at least three different, well-known companies. That way you can price compare, check out each companies references, their track record, etc. This is EXTREMELY important obviously because this company (whoever you end up choosing) will have and be in control of all of your belongings! But, if you just do your homework, and do it thoroughly, you will be fine. Also, always make sure to read the fine print on any contract you end up having to sign!
Overall moving is obviously something that we’d rather avoid, but if the right steps are taken and basic common sense is used, it can be a basically pain free process. One thing one should also take into account is the climate of where you are moving to and moving from. With snowy weather you will have a couple more things to think about as compared to sunny weather. How much longer will it take? Do I need more insurance if the interstate moving companies are driving on bad roads, in bad weather, etc.
All in all, remember a couple small things. interstate moving companies are there to help you, so let them, and wherever you’re going, do it with a smile and an open mind!

Many people wonder why they get charged one rate at a Super 8. airport hotels and another at a Hilton when they are using nothing more than a bed. If that is the case, they may be staying at the wrong type of hotel facilities and could use a little guidance as to what to expect based on the top of property that they are staying. Lodging comes in three different tiers and each one of them is meant to service a specific market.
The lowest level of amenities will be received at extended stay properties. These are properties that are strictly meant for longer stays that will not cost as much money as any other type of hotel or motel. The reason the rates are so low is because they do not usually offer the types of amenities that people would generally expect from a hotel.
It is a rare extended stay property that will have a rate anywhere near $100/night. The longer the guest is staying, the more likely that the rate will be lower. For this generous rate, they get very little other than a bed and a parking spot. There will usually be laundry facilities of some type and maid service will be very limited.
One step up would be considered limited service properties. These are properties like the Garden Inn or Days Inn. Room rates are a little higher, but there is not much more in the way of the typical hotel amenities. Owners of these properties make some of the highest profits in the industry so you can expect them to be clean, but they will be run very tight.
Maid service in limited service properties will usually be a daily occurrence, unless they are at the bottom tier of the scale. They may even only offer it on request. While some of them offer meeting rooms and banquet space, it is very limited. There may or may not be a restaurant on property and will probably offer a continental breakfast for their guests.
The hotels with the best hotel facilities are known as full service hotels. For these amenities, the guest can expect to pay considerably more. A nice travel tip is to look for full service hotels that are surrounded by limited service hotels. They will have to drop their rates to stay competitive in their market.
Types of full service hotels would be properties such as Hilton and Marriott. They are typical of full service hotels in that they treat their VIP members like gold. Their highest levels can expect free breakfast, a welcome amenity, honor bar with free hours d’ oeuvres and express check ins. These types of properties are generally required to have a full service restaurant, health spa, snack shop along with high end banquet facilities.
If a travel is doing nothing more than sleeping in their room, why waste the money at a full service hotel. A place like the Garden Inn will still offer a free continental and a high level of service. When the guest wants to be pampered, pay the few extra dollars and take advantage of the hotel facilities that are offered.
